Just reading old posts and I know it is a bit late but at Mid-Week Seic, (you know the one with the 90km winds), I rode past the last jump because my number had flipped up, I realised my mistake, circled and jumped the jump. I was penalised 20 plus obviously the extra time penalties. I questioned it with the TD and he was very unsympathic and basically said "you walked the course didn't you, then you knew which jump you had to jump". It this correct?

Yeah I think if you ride right past a fence they have no choice but to penalize espc at a venue like SIEC when you would have almost had to avoid it.

There is no rule about riding past a jump - resulting in 20 penalties.
You are penalised if your horse disobediently avoids a jump. So if the horse has 'presented' to the jump it is penalised.
If you ride past a jump, and have to go back, you don't get any time off...it was your fault for riding past it. But you are not penalised for a refusal or circle either. (Unless it is a combination jump).
But if you jump the next jump or go through the finishing line before going back, you are eliminated.
Did you fill out a query form at the Sydney event?
You may have to pay $50 for a protest, but it is worthwhile knowing the rules and being sure of your position. Then your $50 will be returned, if you are correct.

isnt there a rule though that if you cross your line (which you have to do if circling back) that that counts as a refusal?

No, if you do not actively present to the jump (even if you circle off to the side) this is not counted as a crossing of your tracks. If you make no attempt to look/present to the fence then you are not penalised, no matter what you do in the mean time.

Thanks guys, I thought so, but not confident at the time to persue it. It's too late now and it would not have made any difference to my placing anyway as I already had a refusal plus the time penalties. If you want to read the full, funny story of my time at that event check out Novembers Horse Magazine!

yeah loved your article, it was a good read, i could feel the nerves and emotions you spoke about, its so funny that we do something that causes us to feel so nauseous and ill at the time but in the end somehow we think its all worth the stress and fear and money.
oh well normal people will never understand us horsey people!

Its tragic isnt it? I absolutely scare myself to death sometimes, but somehow I always go back for more. I hope you have much better luck next time, you've certainly had your fair share of bad luck.
