Dear Members, The EA 2011 Eventing rules are now available. www.efanational.com/default.asp?MenuID=Sports/11757/0,Eventing/11733/373 Please ensure that you read the changes...and beware that you can accumulate 'errors of course' in the dressage quite easily. (Whips, outside the arena marks etc) 3 errors = elimination. Although the Judge should continue to mark your test until the end unless your horse is 'markedly' lame, or a Vet requests you retire or you retire for other reasons including resistance that lasts more than 20 seconds.

Vicki, I am confused.
From the looks of this addition and the crossing out of the old whip rule it sounds like whips are OK to use in the dressage arena now? Can you confirm this?
Training: A whip no longer than 120cm including lash may be carried when riding on the flat at any time. While jumping any obstacle before the Cross-Country and/or Jumping Test, a whip, if carried, must not be weighted at the end or exceed 75cm in length.
Dressage Test: Dressage Test: It is forbidden to carry a whip of any kind while competing in the arena. However, the use of one whip, with a total maximum length of 120 cm (Pony competitions maximum 100 cm), in the practice area is allowed. The whip must be dropped before entering the space around the competition arena or the athlete will entail a penalty. All of the following are considered errors as FEI Rules for Dressage Art. 430.3 & 430.4: - Entering the space around the arena with whip or - Entering the dressage arena with whip First error -2 Points Second error -4 Points Third error - Elimination Cross Country and Jumping: If a whip is carried in the Cross Country and/or Jumping Test, it must not be weighted at the end or exceed 75 cm.

Hi Sam, Have a look on Page 37 of the 2011 Eventing Rules. This relates to the Dressage phase, and the penalties for carrying a whip into the arena. The earlier reference to a whip has more to do with horse inspections, and so reference to whips when riding was removed from this part.

Darn, i got all excited then.
I do think that the edited wording leaves it a little too open for interpretation, i know a few people who have seen it the same way I initially did.

My favourite bit is ....
The whip must be dropped before entering the space around the competition arena or the athlete will entail a penalty.
Thus, if you hand your whip to your groom or your mum, you will entail a penalty as the whip "MUST BE DROPPED" !!!
I do miss Arnold Martin who did a wonderful job of proof reading our rules and ensuring they made sense!!

Hi Michelle,
If you need another set of eyes for proof reading I'm happy to lend a hand.
