I have been reading Section 19 of the rules which states the SJ is supposed to have slightly less influence on the results than the dressage, which is supposed to have considerably less influence than the XC phase.
How is this supposed to be achieved?

Good question: as the rules state: 19. RELATIVE INFLUENCE The relative influence on the whole competition exerted by the dressage should be slightly more than exerted by the jumping, but considerably less that that exerted by the cross-country.. The Xc course designer works hard to get this right .. as the standard of the dressage test is set, the dimensions/speeds of XC are set, so the biggest test is for the Jumping course designer to get the level right, relative to the other two phases, and this is where the most variation is to be found.

Perhaps clubs need to be reminded about this rule? From what I've seen, many clubs call on showjumping experts to design the SJ course for an ODE, and perhaps those people, not being eventers themselves, are not aware of rule 19.

Linda, you will be pleased to know that at the suggestion of ENSW (and with the prose of Shane Rose) we have just got a document approved for National distribution, that talks about what we are trying to achieve in the jumping at each level. We will post it on the website when it is finished. Vince
