I overheard somebody tell a rider that you do not need a bridle number for xc. Is that correct? I thought you did.

The horse needs to have a number on in all 3 phases. It can be on the bridle, saddlecloth or breastplate.

The rule requires that the horse carries its number on the bridle or the saddle cloth. (breast plate is not within the rules)
Rule 24. 1.2. For the purposes of easy identification after a rider has been separated from his horse, a horse must also carry its number either on the saddle cloth or the bridle.

Is there any reason why it couldn't be fixed to the breastplate? I've being putting it there as it's an easy place to fix it. Obviously will have to change, but is there any chance this rule could be broadened to include things like the breastplate or martingale?

It is very hard for the dressage judge to see a number on a breastplate. So not on option. If you have a number on the bridle for DR, why is it hard to have it on the bridle for the other 2 phases?

I have numbers on my dressage saddle blanket for dressage. I find bridle numbers are awkward to fit to the bridle and usually pull the throatlash out of alignment.

To be honest I have seen a number of competitors (a few at 3*** level) use numbers on their breastplate - on the chest, and have at many different competitions. Fair enough to have to as a rule, but if it's in the rule book it probably needs to be enforced so that others don't believe it is acceptable. If competitors in the lower levels see someone at the higher levels doing something, they are likely to think it's okay.

it isn't a rule that you can't have a number on the breastplate...just a rule that you must have one on the bridle or saddle cloth.

i have these plastic discs sewn onto my saddlecloths that the numbers click into, they are a great alternative to bridle numbers which i find really ugly and hard to attach securely.
