EVENT CALLED OFF!
More steady rain overnight, combined with some periods of heavy rain - over an inch in total - resulted in us calling the event off. The forecast is for more rain and periods of heavy rain until Sunday afternoon. Our main concerns were the parking paddock, with large areas waterlogged and the creek running too deep for vehicles and floats to cross, many areas of the XC course waterlogged, and the difficulty getting fence judges into position without getting them bogged - and getting them across the creek. Not to talk about slippery going on the XC course!
We are very disappointed to have to "pull the plug" in the middle of the event - in 21 years, we have never before done this at Berrima. However, the ground was already quite saturated by rainfall in March and April, and the headwaters of Wells Creek were likewise. We do not have the capacity to "reconvene" in a week - and in any case, the forecast was lots more rain this week.
The Rules for Eventing cover this scenario - and therefore we have awarded the placings for each class to the best scores in the phases held up until the event is called off. For some classes, this will include Dressage and Jumping, and for others, just Dressage. We will send your cheques and ribbons, but ask the winners to pick up your rugs at our next event.
A huge thank you to all the officials and volunteers who helped prepare for the event and assisted with the event on Saturday - particularly those out in the rain - I will single out the Jumping volunteers and Jumping marshal Rod Winchester. Thank you also to the Committee Members who came for bacon and egg rolls on Sunday morning - and cleaned up and put away everything. An extra thank you for Kel Nagle, who called in and gave us a hand. While picking up the flags and numbers on the cross country, it became obvious that the correct decision had been made, with many seriously wet and slippery areas.
This photo - taken at 9am - tells the story!

Boo Hiss to a few disgruntled punters who abused some of our committee members for cancelling - one even asked for her money back - and one who even dared to ask if she could have a school over the course on Sunday morning!
We will post our results on the website as soon as we are able!
