Has anyone got a remedy for stopping hay going mouldy, i only buy 4 bales at a time but by the time i get to the last bale it is always dusty on the outside edges (looks like mould spores) its not wet or mouldy looking but its riddled with mould spore dust if that makes sense.
Its not an issue with the hay as the first 3 bales are always fine but after a few weeks the last bale always goes dodgy, my feed shed is a stable with a dirt floor and i have some pallates on the ground to keep the hay off the floor, ive tried covering it with a tarp but it's not working, i am guessing this weather is not helping either.
Anyone got any solutions?

Hay should keep for years. It will loose some colour but won't go mouldy and good hay never gets hot....it can cause shed fires.
I would talk to your supplier and complain, or buy hay that is not so 'green'...hay that is more dry at the time of purchase.
Very green hay ussually doesn't have many stalks, either, and stalks are good for horses, thats why you feed hay opposed to only chaff and grain/pellets.

Sami this hay you've bought has been baled too wet, then when it sits for a while the moisture turns to mould, this while give your horses colic if you feed it to them mouldy, even a risk just before it goes "off" as vicki says, return it to your supplier, good hay will last in shed for years

I must say I agree with the others, although I keep my hay in a concrete floor shed it does last forever I've never had it go bad I haven't kept it for years but defiantly had it quite a few months at a time, I buy the Lucerne grass mix hay maybe that has something to do with it. Where have you been getting it from?

i really don't think it's the hay its nice and dry inside and out and its not getting actual mould inside it, its only the edges that get this spory dust on it, there is no actual white mould bits liek you see in mulch hay. its got good stalk and i have been using the same supplier for many years, i will raise it with him anyway just to see if anyone else has had the issue. ive been having the issue since Feb so pretty much since the rains started. the shed doesnt leak and the hay is off the ground, not sure what else i can do.

Sami, I agree with all the others. But know what you are talking about. I have had it on perfect hay I have left on pallets in my open shed, because the misty rain comes in, even though it's so far in. So you could try putting a tarp on it ( inwarm weather not perfect though, cause could sweat), or what I have done is put it in a container. Which is a risk if your hay wasn't bailed perfect, because then it will be come mouldy! I have had that happen before, so am reluctant to buy too many at a time. I'm happy with my new suppliers so will happily put 200 bales in at the moment. Not sure if I will do that come summer time though due to the humidity.
