I was bored and started reading the changes to the rule book, and came to runouts... It says as a change that "A competitor will also be penalised 20 penalties if the horse disobediently avoids that part of the obstacle at which it has been presented, but succeeds in jumping the obstacle at some other part, between the flags. However, a rider is permitted to change his mind as to where he jumps an obstacle or any element, at any time, without penalty, including as a result of a mistake at a previous obstacle, or element." Is that meant to mean that if my horse canters up to a log, then just before it jumps sideways then jumps (still making it between the flags) its a run out?? Interesting changes!! Maybe I should try reading the whole book now!

And does this mean that a rider can change direction right before an obstacle to take an alternate route without penalty? So a clever rider could possibly make it look like the horse baulking was actually the rider deciding to take the alternate route...? Does this make it quite subjective and at the discretion of the jump judge? I saw once a rider come out of Badminton lake and, looking like they were facing up to the outward bounce, suddenly changed in front of the fence and took the long route. I can't remember what the outcome was but I did wonder if that was a runout or not. The horse did look like he was not going to jump it by the way, but it was quite a fine line between rider initiated or horse initiated.
If that is the case- that it makes it easier to avoid a run out or refusal - doesn't that become more of a contentious issue than changing the format? This would theoretically make it easier to get around without huge penalties (maybe with a few more time penalties).

i got to go on the course walk with sonja at adelaide, and there was a particularly tough double at the end of the course and she was saying that "if your horse lands yuk then you have to make it really obvious that you are turning, open the rein and everything.." or something like that, and then joked about how some people have perfected it and yelled out "turning!" when they decide against jumping a fence...
