OK where do I find the eventing rules ? can only find the amendments
..or can someone tell me the overtaking rule..my sister rode my horse in intro at Berrima & it was her first event after an 18 month 'baby break' & was a little rusty..on cross country she had time penalties because she could not get around the rider in front who was having trouble with jumps & was genarally slow..three times in between jumps sister called 'coming through' but other rider simply sped up before slowing right down when getting within 50 metres or so of the jump...vaguely remembered you could circle but couldn't remember how the rule worked..prehaps she would'nt have won but would have moved up a few places from 6th ..she was wearing a watch which of course increased the frustration

In the rules it states that: Any competitor who is about to be overtkaen by a following competitior must quickly clear the way. Any competitor overtaking another competitor may only do so at a safe and suitable place. When the leading competitor is before an obstacle and about to be over taken, he must follow the directions of the officials. When the leading competitior is committed to jumping an obstacle, a following competitor may jump that obstacle only in such a way that will cause no inconvenience or danger to either,
The penalty for wilful obstruction of an overtaking competitor, failure to follow the instrucitons of the officials or causing danger to another competitor is elimination at the discretion of the TD.
In the case of a preceding competitor not allowing safe overtaking, it is the responsibility of the following compeitor to draw back or circle to allow a safe distance between himself and the preceding competitor. In such a case, the TD will consider a request to deduct the extra time incurred by such a maneuver done in the interest of safety. The time during which the competitor is held up by Officials will be recorded and deducted from the toal time taken by the competitor to complete the course.
Hope that helps although it wont make up for the weekend.

Melissa's advice is spot on, if the rider wont let you past or it isn't safe to do so, talk to the TD after XC. They can look at the situation. At the end of the day the TD has two key responsibilities SAFETY (always no.1) and fairness. Most TD's aren't the scary monsters we believe them to be.

thanks for the replies - a little clearer for next time ..would have been hard to do anything this time as had the second horse to ride & not much time to change over ...also the other rider seemed young & may not have been concentrating on anything other than staying on lol!
